My name is Alina Maroukian and like many people, I have lived experience of issues such as grief, trauma and anxiety. During those times I was able to work through the weight and pain of those feelings, with the kind support and acceptance I received in counselling, which I am profoundly grateful for. That in itself helped inspire my belief in the value of therapy, long before I became a counsellor myself. One of the things that has resonated in me through my own struggles is that life does not always move in smooth or predictable ways. Sometimes it feels deeply unsettling, and at other times we may question whether our struggles are significant enough to warrant support. Yet moments of feeling lost, shocked, confused or lonely are part of being human, and reaching out can be an important step towards regaining a sense of grounding.
In addition, I have a particular interest in neurodiversity, including Autism, ADHD and OCD, shaped by close family experience and a genuine passion for supporting neurodiverse individuals, and the people in their lives who are carrying the challenging and rewarding role of supporting them. I am also closely familiar with what it feels like to adapt to a different culture to the one you were born or raised in, and the pressures and rewards of navigating through complex cross-cultural and administrative hurdles. Moreover, as a parent and as a working professional, I understand the pressure and family dynamics that can complicate and add nuance to so many of these challenges.
Altogether, these experiences have inspired me onto my own journey of becoming a psychotherapeutic counsellor. I am an accredited member of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society. In addition to neurodiversity, and cross-cultural challenges, I have a keen interest in supporting clients who are managing work–life balance and navigating key life‑stage transitions, including new parenthood, mid‑life, and, for women in particular, the post‑partum period, perimenopause and menopause.
I currently only work with adult clients, 18 years and over. Although I do not work with young people under the age of 18 in my private practice, I do have experience in working with young people ages 11-18, through a charitable counselling agency. This experience helps inform my approach in supporting young adults or adults who look after young people of these ages.
I work in an integrative way, which allows us to tailor the therapeutic process according to your individual needs. As I do so, I maintain a collaborative and person‑centred approach, meaning that we reflect together regularly on what is working for you and check-in regarding where you would like to focus as we progress. My aim is to walk alongside you as you navigate whatever is going on for you at this point in your life, offering support that is attuned, respectful and genuinely collaborative.
I have experience supporting clients with a variety of issues, such as:
I work from private therapy rooms at The Practice Rooms in Reading (RG1), and see clients from Reading itself as well as the surrounding Theale, Pangbourne, Wokingham, Winnersh, Bracknell, Sonning, Twyford, Wargrave and Henley-on-Thames areas.
In addition to providing face-to-face therapy, I also offer online counselling sessions via Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet for clients across Berkshire and beyond. Please feel free to contact me to find out more about how online therapy works.
I offer a free, initial 30-minute call, online or by telephone, for us to connect and see if I am the right counsellor for you. Regular sessions last 50 minutes, normally on a weekly basis.
Session cost is £50/ session, online or in person.
Concessions are £35 and can be made upon agreement. Usually, concessions are offered in exceptional circumstances (for example, low-income, unemployment, or requirement for therapy as a counselling student) and proof may be requested. Contact me regarding availability.
Please note, cancellations require a minimum of 24 hours' notice (except in an emergency), otherwise a full charge will still be incurred.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about how counselling works, or to arrange an initial appointment. This enables us to discuss the reasons you are thinking of coming to counselling, whether it could be helpful for you and whether I am the right therapist to help.
You can also call me on 07444 739963 if you would prefer to leave a message or speak to me first.
